Weekend in Busan

Made my way to Cheonan-Asan Station (천안아산역), via Bus 370, a train to Cheonan, and then taxi to the station. Got tickets to Busan, and a ticket to come back Sunday afternoon.

My friend and I didn't have any lunch, so we had a late lunch - McDonalds. The McDonalds in Nampodong is huge. This is only one small section of it.

We then walked around and did a bit of shopping, and we found Frisbee - an Apple Premium Reseller. The staff there were so helpful and kind (and did the whole "한국말 잘하시네요" (you speak korean well, in a surprised voice) thing - I think I got that about 5 or 6 times this weekend). Maybe they just enjoyed their job, or maybe it was because I spent $400 there. Anyway, I had a good experience there, so the next day, I bought them some Krispy Kream donuts.

Later on that evening, we had dinner at out most favourite Galbi (갈비) restaurant in ALL of Korea, 생수갈비, met up with some of 성진's friends, and went to a bar and did a bit more shopping. They had to go, so after that, we got some Krispy Kream donuts, some drinks, and went to 용구산 공원 (Yongdusan Park) and chatted.

Sunday Morning breakfast - 소육백반, or as I called it "모닝 갈비". It was very good. A nice selection of 반찬/side dishes, and the meat wasn't overcooked, and was thinner than regular galbi/samgyeopsal.

We did a bit of internet research, and found 나무그늘, a place that has the skin care fish for your feet. So, we got some drinks, and paid for Dr. Fish. It was not busy at all, when we got there, there were only about 7 or 8 people there, including the staff working there.

Since it was very quiet there, they let us have Dr Fish for 30 minutes. It was 성진's first time to have fish eat his feet, so he was more surprised and shocked than I was when I put my feet in.

After that, went to Busan station, and made my way home. Decided to treat myself to Pizza, and got Domino's. Wasn't anywhere as good as Domino's back home, so I think I'll try some other cheaper Korean Pizza places near my house next time.

40 to go...

Went to Daegu and Busan, to catch up with a few friends before I go. I can't meet up with everyone... If I don't meet up with you before I leave... well (sorry to he harsh), but deal with it *^^*

Here's a couple of photos from the weekend:

I have mixed feelings about why I'm leaving. I'll be honest - all things said and done, I like Korea, and I will miss it. I just really hate my job, and stuff to do with "English". I'd be happy working in a restaurant waiting tables in a 갈비집 for 6-12 months, coz it's something different. Lol

Meh... as long as I get home safe, it'll be all good ^^

Weekend in Busan

Had a weekend in Busan, and hung out with friends. Here's a few photos:

Arrived at Sasang (사상) terminal in Busan just after 2pm, and went to Lotte Cinema to get 2 tickets for Dark Knight, for my friend and I to watch when he finished work. Had some KFC for lunch, and found a PC bang to hang out in until he finished work. Met him at Home Plus, but he had to take a work mate home, so we missed the start of the movie (he has no 시기센스 ^^), but didn't miss much, just the first crime involving the Joker.

After the movie, we met a couple of other friends at Home Plus, just near the cinema, then went off to have some Galbi, play some pool, and then went to a very expensive noraebang *^^*

On Sunday, we got some Pizza for lunch...

...waited for the car in the carpark...

...then headed out to Gwangalli Beach (광안리 해수욕장) for a bit of sun.

More trains, More Shopping

Woke up a bit late, since was tired from all the walking around on Sunday, but it was good. Washed up, and headed out for breakfast. Went to a 국밥 place that SJ and I have been to a few times. Then we walked around Nampodong for some more shopping. I bought a T-shirt, a sleeveless jacket and a pair of shorts. SJ and I went to ABC Mart (a shoe store) and bought some slip ons for summer. They didn't have size 300 in stock for me, but I tried on a pair of 290's, and they fit okay. They'll stretch a little as I wear them.

After shopping, we met up with one of SJ's high school friends, and had lunch together. I had a train at 2pm to catch, so we rushed back to SJ's place, and then go to 부산역 (Busan Station) and said goodbye. I was getting KTX from Busan to Daejeon, and then Mugunghwa from Daejeon to Jangseong. I'm not a fan of Daejeon Station, since that every time I go there, its busy. Today was busier than usual, since it was a public holiday.

This is the reason why I bought all my train tickets a while ago, coz I knew that things were gonna be super busy, especially since there were 2 long weekends in a row. Children's day is a joke, but I can understand having a day off for Buddha.

I noticed that seat availability on the huge signs at train stations, is only in Korean (if I'm wrong, tell me *^^*), so just thought I'd explain it for the people checking it out:

along the top in red it says: 승차권 (ticket) 발매 (sale) 현황 (current state), so it would mean: current ticket availability.

the columns are: 열차 (train) 이름 (name); 출발 (departure) 시간 (time); the next five names in green are destinations of the train (구미 Gumi, 동대구 East Daegu, 밀양 Milyang, 구포 Gupo and 부산 Busan); the last is 열차 (train) 번호 (number).

There are three types of trains regularly used: KTX, which is the fastest train (up to 300km/h on some parts of the track), 무궁화 (Mugunghwa), which is the oldest, slowest, cheapest, and stops at a lot more stations; and 새마을 (Sae-ma-eul, roughly translated "New Village", which is newer than Mugunghwa (Saemaeul has curved rectangular windows, and aren't all that comfortable to lean on, where Mugunghwa has large rectangular windows, which are great for leaning on, and looking out), almost the same price as KTX, but stops at less stations.

Train departure times are in 24-hour time.

The information for seat availability is as follows:
a "-" means that the train doesn't stop at that station.
좌석 means there are seats available (and is usually printed in green)
입삭 means that all the seats are taken up, but you can get a "standing room" ticket, which means you're standing on the train, and are designated a carriage to stand in. This is cheaper than a seat, but I'm not a fan of having to hang on and keep my balance every time the train gets a bit bumpy.
매진 means that all tickets for that destination, are sold out.

Train numbers are just the ID number of that train.

Anyway, I got home just after 7pm, and cleaned up a little. I had to have a shower, since the air conditioners wern't turned on on the Mugunghwa train, and there was a plan to head out to find some dinner, but had to change that plan since a thunder and lightning storm came though. Ordered some pizza, and then relaxed for a while.

Hotties and Donuts (not together, unfortunately)

I got to Busan on time, and met SJ in Seomyeon. He was having dinner with some bosses from his work, and I was dragged along. They new minimal English, but we got by with that, and some Korean.

On Sunday, we decided to go to the Busan International Motor Show at Bexco. It was really busy! SJ knew a friend who worked at Bexco, and we got free tickets. Here are a few pics from there:

Most of the "Racing girls" (which is what the models that "accompany" the cars are called in Korea), looked damn hot, and that's one of the main reasons for guys to go (unless they are really really interested in cars as well). So, to be totally superficial, I've chosen a few of the models that caught my attention. This is totally superficial, by the way *^^*

After all that, and dealing with the insane amount of people there, SJ and I decided to go to Haeundae and walk around, but the beach was invaded by Christians having some celebration, which I kinda thought was ironic, since it was the Buddha's Birthday Holiday (부처님 오신 날) the next day. Probably just after some attention :p So, we decided to go to SfunZ (Special Fun Zone) to have a look (a shopping mall, and I was a bit annoyed that the CD shop was not there anymore). We had some Baskin Robins Ice-cream, checked out Artbox, and then got the subway back to Nampodong.

Nampodong at Night

Had some Galbi for dinner, then headed to SJ's Parents shop, since he had to close up. It was mother's day on Sunday (well, in Australia it was anyway), so I might SJ's mum a small cake from Paris Baguette. We walked around Nampodong, went to Noraebang for an hour and a bit, walked around, seeing what was open, and then decided to get some Donuts from Krispy Kream.

We walked to Yongdosan Park (용두산 공원) to eat the donuts, and stopped at a 편의점 (Convenience Store) on the way for a couple of drinks. We sat there, ate some donuts, and talked. There were some lanterns set up at the park, for the Buddha's Birthday Holiday on Monday, so I took a couple of photos of those.

Geomdo, trains and Manju

Getting up at 7:30am this morning was a struggle. Its been a while since I've had to wake up at that time. For the first time in a few weeks, I'm going to Jeongeup to do Geomdo. Just get the local bus to Jangseong, then another bus to Jeongeup. Total travel and waiting time is about 1 hour 10 mins.

It was good to see my Geomdo teacher again. I bought a few things from Paris Baguette (a bakery chain here in Korea) since I skipped breakfast. My teacher also didnt eat, so we ate before doing Geomdo. I was so tired from getting up early, that I didnt have much strength. We recapped Yedo 1, 2 and 3 and then had a break. Started to learn pattern 4, but only the start, coz its easy. We were gonna try cutting bamboo, but I had no strength at all.

After Geomdo, I went to Jeongeup train station, and got the train to Seodaejeon (West Daejeon) station, a taxi to Daejeon station (had to change train lines), and got KTX to Busan. I bought some Manju, which is a kind of soft baked snack, with some kind of cream in the middle. I only see the shops at busy train stations, so I decided to buy some today.

I shared them with a guy sitting next to me and we started up a conversation. A few other guys in some seats near me started looking at me, coz I'm a foreigner speaking (well, trying to speak) Korean. Just talked about the usual things: how long have you been in Korea, where are you from, what do you do, where are you going.

The ends of sentences in Korean still confuse me, but I'm slowly getting used to it.

Weekend, Phone

Friday nights classes weren't as bad as they normally are, which was kind of surprising. For many people, Wednesday is hump day for them. A while ago, I used to have middle school classes on Thursday, and Thursday was my hump day. But since I have middle school classes on Friday, Friday is the day that I need to that I need to get over to feel better. With that out of the way, I went home, and packed my bags for the weekend.

Woke up at 7:30am Saturday morning, had breakfast and a shower, then got the bus to Jangseong, then another bus to Jeongeup for my Geomdo lesson. We went over some old stuff, in which we all had trouble remembering, but after I did a search on the internet for the thing we had trouble remembering, it all came back. I've decided that getting 2nd level black belt is more important (and also more realistic) to me than competing in a competition. After that, we practised paper cutting.

I got the train from Jeongeup to West Daejeon station(서대전역), a taxi to Daejeon station (대전역) and then KTX to Busan. There is no direct bus from Jeongeup to Busan, and given the choice, i'd rather take two trains, than two buses. With the 1 hour wait in Daejeon, it is actually a little quicker than getting a bus to Gwangju and then another bus to Busan. Also, with taking the train, there's a toilet there all the time. lol.

Arrived in Busan at 7:30, and took the subway to Jagalchi station to meet SJ and JU. I haven't seen JU for a long time, so it was good to see him again. We had galbi for dinner, then went to Beer Mart for a few drinks. Sunday, SJ and I hung around Jagalchi for a bit of shopping. I'm really over going to shoe places, and then not having my size - especially when they say they have your size, and then they go and check, and they say they don't have it.

It was SJ's mother's birthday on Sunday, so SJ bought some flowers for her, and I bought her a cake. So, after giving those to her, we went back to SJ's house, got by bags, and headed to Sasang Terminal. On the way to the terminal, we stopped by a kind of "factory outlet" for Nike, Puma, Adidas and Reebok. I bought a green Puma bag (exactly the same as SJ's) for 22,000won, 50% off the original price. When I saw his bag, I was really impressed. It's the kind of bag I've been looking for for ages, to hold all my crap I need in it.

Got the bus to Jinhae, which was absolutely packed - packed as in, it starts to smell bad. By this time, I had 3 bags, and a few people tried to sit next to me, but i just pointed to my 3 bags, and they winged a bit, but I just ignored them. I was tired from walking around Jagalchi, and carrying a huge ass bag with clothes for your long weekend, and your computer, I was not in the mood for people having a winge.

It was great seeing HP and YS again. The last time I saw them was in January, when they got married. I bought them some cute socks when I was in Jagalchi for them. The socks on the left, I bought for HP. 좌절금지 means "breaking down prohibited" *^^* YS cooked dinner for us, and it was so delicious. Then we talked for a while, and then played 맞고 with HP. We decided to play by points, and the first to 100 points was the winner. HP had a good start, but I caught up, and then HP had a lucky game, getting about 40 points, which got him over 100 points. 맞고 is a mix of strategy and luck - sometimes more than one than the other *^^*

It was so good to have the day off on Monday. Woke up late, and then went to Changwon for lunch, and checked out a big 문구 called Alpha. I bought a notebook for studying, but going to use it for other things. We went to a famous 순두부 restaurant in Changwon, and it was really good - the best 순두부 that I've had so far. We went back to HP's mum's house to see her. It was good to see her again. HP's sister, SJ (different than SJ that I met on Saturday) is studying in Jinju, so I wasn't able to see her.

We went back to Jinhae, and visited YS in her Art 학원. She runs her own small Art institute so it was cool to see that. Then to the 서예학원 (Calligraphy hagwon) that HP goes to. It was really interesting to see people practising writing Chinese characters (한자). Its harder than it actually looks. I watched HP doing it, and then tried, and I just couldn't get it. hehe. It seems like an interesting thing to do, and very peaceful. Then went back to the apartment, got my bags, and then went to HP's uni, because he had a thing to attend. Went to Gupo train station, to get the train back to Jangseong, via Daejeon.

As I was getting off the train at Daejeon station, it was packed with people getting off, and wanting to get on. Do you think that there was someone stupid enough to try and push though a tired foreigner carrying three bags? Of course there was! I told him to wait, and he kept pushing, so i told him not to touch me, and he kept doing it. Its one thing I don't get here. It packed, you can't move though quickly. You don't push people who have huge, heavy bags, and who are also trying to get though. He said something back to me, but I ignored it. I just gave him my evil look, and left it at that. I wasn't going to take it down to his level. I did mutter "싸까지 없네" under my voice, which I think he heard - which was good. At least there was some free wifi at Seodaejeon station *^^*

Got my new phone yesterday - and its not Samsung, so it's good. The korean letter layout on the phone is different, so it has slowed me down a bit when writing messages.

New Friends, New Year, New Andy ^^

Got to Busan after my Geomdo lesson in Jeongeup. Was going over the first half of all the stuff I learnt in the past two years, just to see what I remember, and get used to my new teacher's style. I learnt a few things wrong, and couldn't remember a few things, but its all good. I started learning the stuff for the competitions as well. It is a lot harder than it looks. Gotta bend my knees a lot, and my knees are fucked.

Met ㅂㅅ in Seomyeon, and then ㅌㅁ found us as well. Her friend (ㅁㅈ) was a little late, but when we all met, we found a nice Bossam place to eat dinner, then went to a coffee shop, and waited for ㅌㅁ's other friend to show up. A few mins after ㅅㅈ turned up, ㅁㅈ had to leave to meet other friends. It was surprising that the four of us felt really comfortable together. After talking and coffee, we went to Noraebang. ㅂㅅ's voice is really good... like, "when is his album coming out?" good. Then went to another place for talking, eating and drinking, and then tried to get a taxi for the girls, and then got one for ourselves.

Met ㅅㅈ and ㅁㅅ in Nampodong, and had Galbi together. Both ㅅㅈ and I didn't eat breakfast, so all together, the 3 of us ate 7 servings of Galbi, but the servings were pretty small, but it tasted damn good. We then went to say hi to ㅅㅈ's parents, who own a shop in Nampodong, and then did some shopping (I remembered that there were a couple of large clothes shops in Nampodong, so ㅅㅈ showed me where they were, and I bought a new jacket), and then went to Noraebang (hehe). I got the subway to Busan station, and then travelled to Daegu.

I met ㄱㅁ and ㅇㅈ at Daegu station, then had dinner. Got some icecream at Baskin Robbins, and then, yes, Noraebang. 3 times within 24 hours. A record for me. But, it was good to see them, and to hang out. Stayed at ㄱㅁ's place. His Grandmother is really kind, but his dad is rather reserved, to the point where I don't feel comfortable. I know its not mine or his fault, ㄱㅁ says he's just really quiet. ㄱㅁ and I walked around Lotte Department Store for a while, there were some nice things there, but wanted to save my cash. Got a subway sandwich to eat on the train (which tasted damn good), and headed for Daejeon.

After taking a taxi to change train lines (the Seoul-Busan line stops at Daejeon station, the Yongsan-Gwangju/Mokpo line stops at West Daejeon station), i was waiting the train, when a Korean guy starts smoking next to me. Normally, I don't give a shit, but there was a sign on the pillar next to us, saying don't smoke, so I said to him (넌 한국거를 몰라? - Don't you know Korean?) and pointed to the sign. He just looked at me, so I said (난 너의중독대문에 안죽고싶어 - I don't want to die because of your addiction), so he put it out. He look a bit younger than me, and we was smaller than me, and if the wind wasn't blowing the smoke into my face, I normally would have ignored it. After being in a country where everyone seems to smoke, and doesn't give a fuck about anyone else in the vacinity, I'd pretty much had enough.

Anyway, got the train back to Jangseong, and then the bus back to my apartment. Even snow doesn't slow bus drivers down!

To everyone who reads this, I hope you had a good ending to 2007, and have an even better start to 2008. I plan to. ^^
